I firmly believe in enjoying little luxuries. I wash my face every night with gorgeous handmade soap. I keep my feet toasty in cozy slippers. And every day after lunch, I make a cup of tea to sip while I work through the afternoon. My collection of Japanese stacking mugs makes the ritual even nicer!

My first mug is still my favorite. I spotted it amongst the ubiquitous mess of mugs at the thrift store and knew it had to be mine. I think it was the curvy handle that did me in.

The other three have all been collected this fall, one at a time from various thrift shops. I love how they are all similar without being quite the same.

These rich glazes make me feel all weak-in-the-knees.

Japanese stacking mugs are cheap and easy to find, which is both a blessing and a curse, in my mind. Etsy is full of them, and I often run into full sets (sometimes with adorable trees to hang them on) in antique stores. Since I enjoy collecting them one at a time, and because I don't want the collection to get out of control, I've set a rule for myself - I only buy a mug if it costs 50 cents or less. This way I maintain the fun of the search, while preventing myself from buying so many that we run out of cabinet space (always a risk!). Two of these mugs were 25 cents, and the other two were 50 cents. Not too shabby!

Are you the collecting type? What do you collect, and do you have any strategies for managing your collection?
I hope your week is off to a great start!

The only little collection I have is vintage Pyrex. My collection is far from matching, but I like mix and match.
I have a little collection of these mugs too, they are the perfect size for a cup of coffee. My favourite collection is vintage hats....have had to stop buying them as my collection is getting a bit too big!
These mugs must have been pretty popular at one time because I am ALWAYS finding them at every thrift store I go to (whether at home or in Philly) and almost everyone I know who is into thrifting has one of these! Ha.
Beautiful mugs :)
I collect different things from time to time. The collection I am proud of is my camera collection, even though it is a small one.
I have such a hard time collecting anything in our house as my boyfriend tends to throw everything out and roll his eyes whenever I bring anything home. We do have some lovely japanese bowls though which I am secretly adding to every now and then :)
These are gorgeous!! :) I've had to stop myself from grabbing too many super-kitschy vintage mugs...lol. I already have a pretty massive doily collection, myself...
I'm not really a collector in general, but I just realized that I am an unwitting collector of these beautiful mugs! They are one thing I really can't resist at the thrift store. My decorating style is very minimal, so bringing out fun little pieces like these is a good way to give my living spaces more character.

I collect too many things- vintage american pottery (mainly fiestaware), old cameras, vintage kokeshi dolls, and any sort of vintage wiener dog that i find cute...
i started my etsy shop to help manage my thrifting addiction :)
also- i am offering a vintage giveaway this week if you'd like to check it out: http://www.aboxofpaint.com/2012/01/january-vintage-giveaway.html
I don't collect anything vintage but I do have a shot glass from each country or new major city I've traveled to- it's now pretty big after my big Europe tour of 2010! My latest addition was New York City this past fall.
Those mugs are gorgeous and put my mismatched snowmen/floral/free conference mugs to shame!
I collect too many things: luggage, cutlery, serviettes and doilies. Too much really. I can't beleive I posted about them and then came to see what you were writing about and bingo. Happy New Year everyone
Wow, I totally have a collection of Japanese stacking mugs too! Only mine are all the dip-glazed kind :) I have around 20 of them :)
I collect vintage Pyrex, but I've seen those mugs in thrift shops around here. You'd have a hard time finding anything for less than 50 cents here, though. Mugs are generally $2.
Those mugs are cool, but I could never stand that the handles are different. It'd drive me batty. I'd have to have the SAME HANDLE.
I collect dog trinkets and little cute stuff from Japan like erasers and Re-Ments. Oh, and books. I have a lot of books. My rule for dog trinkets is they must be smaller than a tennis ball or part of one of the Re-Ment collections I'm collecting. My Japan tchotckes all follow the same principle as well. My books....my books must be part of a series I'm collecting (like my Boxcar Children), a series I'm reading, a series I've read and loved....or I loved the cover and I was intrigued and it was cheap and gosh darnit, I just HAD to have it. Books generally just have no rules with me! I try to have them (I really do), but I break them...a lot. I love my books too much!
I tend to collect little glass and porcelain things. I'm a bit of a girly girl.
I tend to not be the collecting type, mostly because things that don't match bother me, like, one of your mugs doesn't have a striped bottom and all the other do, and that would bother me a lot lol. On the other hand I don't get bothered if all of the things are very different, like if one of the mugs had polka dots on the bottom, the other had stripes and the other was plain.
As you can imagine, this kind of thinking would make it hard to collect pretty much anything xD
Did I just come across like a bit of a nut job? xD
those are stunning glazes. nice collection you have going there.
I collect all sorts from vintage tins to tea cups, mugs and cake plates. I can't stop hoarding!
Love these! I especially like the green one. I have a bit of a thing for crockery, and I adore Japanese crockery. I can't say I've seen many of these in charity shops here in England, but I'll keep my eye out for some.
