When I saw this gold dress on the rack at the thrift store a few weeks ago, I knew it was fate: I had to go as Cleopatra for Halloween. Seriously, how perfect is it? I found the headpiece and gold belt on the same trip, and took them all home for less than $5 total. All that was left was to wait for a massive sale at the costume shop and buy the wig (for another $5), then put it all together with a few pieces that I had at home. The makeup was the hardest part - I'm sooo not a makeup person, so heavy eyeliner and shadow was a challenge. I had to re-do it three times (good thing I started early)!
Of course it was FREEZING on Saturday night, so I traded out the greek sandals I was originally planning on wearing for boots and thick socks, and finished off the costume with a short sleeved brown sweater and long-johns underneath. Toasty!

I'm kind of in love with this costume. It's probably the most elaborate that I've ever done as an adult. Dressing up is so much fun, especially on the cheap!
Obviously, Nate and I didn't do a couple's costume this year. He went as Jimmy, the bartender at our favorite local pizza place. In retrospect, it would have been awesome if he had gone as ex Mr. J-Lo, Marc Anthony. We would have spent the whole night explaining it, and it would have been funny to me every time (or maybe I'm just weird in finding semi-lame couples' costume ideas hilarious?). This costume is pretty great too, though - neighborhood pride!
We dressed up for wine tasting, dinner, and a late night out at a bar on Saturday, and are putting together a re-do for dinner and drinks with friends tonight. Yay for costumes!
Happy Halloween, everyone! Did you dress up to celebrate?

GREAT costume, Alli!! and you can totally wear that dress in real life, too - well done!
I did my first thrifted costume this year, and it was so much fun! Rocked the gypsy lady look, so I can totally relate to the eye makeup issue! :)
Great look! Kudos!!
Dewey's!!! Oh, how I love their pizza!
Your costume is absolutely adorable! It fits your personality/career oh-so-well :) ... and I, too, had a very difficult time with the make-up this year. You think because you're a creative person, it'll be no trouble at all. But an hour and a half a bag of cotton-swabs later, you end up with something that resembles your original vision! That's how it went for me, anyway.
Happy Halloween! That costume is fantastic, you really pulled everything together so well! The next time Halloween rolls around on a Friday/weekend, I'm going as Elphaba (or just the Wicked Witch of the West, whichever you prefer); it's too much makeup-wise for a Monday at school, haha.
I can't believe you found all that at a thrift store! And all in one go! All we have around here is Goodwill and the selection is seriously lacking.
This is surely one of my favorite costumes I've seen this year!
that's hilarious re: dewey's bartender dude that has worked there forever.
I was so looking forward to seeing your costume! Beautiful! It is so perfect.
Seriously the perfect dress.

Your costume is soooo awesome, and I would have laughed really hard if he went as Marc Anthony too. I love cheesy stuff like that :)
Great costume, I love how you used things you had & can use again. That dress looks great on you too! Glad you had a fun one : )

Thanks, everyone! Yes, I got super incredibly lucky on that thrift trip - I couldn't believe it!
I'm not sure what it is about putting on makeup that's so difficult. It's like all of my hand-eye coordination breaks down!
Drew and Val, all the Cliftonites loved Nate's costume, haha (although people at Arlin's kept asking if we had any pizza...).
how perfect is that snake belt?! You guys always look great.
