Sharpie recently sent me a big package of their newest products to play with (I know, rough life!). Of course I immediately had to try out the Stained by Sharpie fabric markers. I can think of a ton of uses for these babies, but to start, I decided to see how they do with embroidery tinting. Tinting can really make embroidery pop, but I've never been able to make the crayon method work well for me. It always ends up streaky, and it doesn't last on items that need to be washed regularly. The stained markers seemed like a perfect alternative.
I gave it a try with a drug store hankie and a cute little Vespa pattern from Sublime Stitching's Scooter Babe sheet.

There's not much of a tutorial to this one! Since I prefer to transfer embroidery patterns with Solvy, I stitched first, then colored. If you like to transfer your pattern onto the fabric, you might want to color first, then stitch. That way you won't accidentally color on your stitches. You don't need to worry about it too much, though - the markers have a super fine brush tip, and I found very easy to keep the color where I wanted it.

Yay, now it looks just like my real life scooter (except I don't often ride through pink fields full of giant flowers). I really loved how this came out - the markers give the perfect pop, and the ink's not at all streaky. It's slightly transparent when dry, so it looks very natural on the fabric, and you can layer to make more vibrant colors. So easy!
Giveaway alert!!
Would you like to try out some Stained markers? It just so happens that I have a pack to give away, courtesy of Sharpie!

To enter:
-Leave a comment below. That's it! You can tell me anything, but I'd really like to hear about a creative project you're working on this fall.
For bonus entries (leave an additional comment for each):
-Be a follower of OPB
-Share the giveaway on Twitter
-Share the giveaway on your blog
-Share the giveaway on Facebook
This giveaway is open to international readers. Entries are valid through Monday, Oct. 17. I'll announce the winner on Tuesday!
***
But wait, there's more! (I always wanted to be on infomercials...)

I'll also be choosing one runner-up, who will receive a five pack of always-classic Sharpie fine point markers in the limited edition "80's Glam" colorway. That means you have two chances to win - so get your entries in!!

«Oldest ‹Older 1 – 200 of 256 Newer› Newest»OooOOoo! Those look great! I make quilts with kids and markers are easier for them to use (they don't color dark enough with the crayons). I'll be on the look out for these! (In case I don't win...)

I'm sewing a Hallowe'en costume and coding a website, and I love Sharpies!
I also follow your blog!
I'm still working on my Lace Love crochet pattern booklet. I have all the patterns compiled and tested, I just need to spend some quality time with my computer and edit them all together. I know it's going to take a few hours, so I've been putting off the past few days. I hope I can have it finished in the next week or two. Ready to share with my fellow stitchers who want to make some lace this Fall.
Oh yay!! I love that it is open to international peeps - these aren't available in Australia yet and I have been drooling over them since I first saw a blog about them...
Hmm, it's coming into Summer here and I have been busily sewing pretty skirts and shorts. I've also been making cute-as diaper covers for my equally cute-as cousin.
I haven't seen these before. I'm dreaming of all the things that I could do with them.
Oddly enough I've been learning to embroider and I love the possibilites! Add in the sharpies and oh man, life just got a little better.

Woah! I didn't even know that such markers existed. Totally cool. Well, I will be working on steam punking my living room. Its going to be a challenge but I think I can pull it through.

And I'm also eager to try out these markers! Your handkerchief is darling and I'm thinking I could make a cute bike seat cover for my new old bike :)
I think these markers can be my gateway into screen printing. I have not quite got the courage for it yet but these markers could help me find the courage.

Wow, those looks like fun.
This autumn, I am actually learning to embroider. It's a slow going process, as I find transferring a design to the fabric to be just as difficult. But it is fun.

I'm so used to crayon-tinting fabric for embroidery. I'd love to see how this works in comparison.
Normally I wouldn't get that excited about Sharpies, but I do love the way you used them in your embroidery. I took up embroidery this summer, and I'd love to try these with one of the pin-up girl patterns from Sew Lovely Embroidery or something from Carina's Craft Blog. Thanks for the giveaway!
I just finished an apron for my little sis over at my blog: errantpear.blogspot.com.

that is seriously awesome! i'd love to try the fine brush tip, fabric markers have a tendency to go all sorts of places they shouldn't, in my experience.

These Sharpies are awesome. I've never added tint to my embroidery, but it sounds like a great idea!
Cool giveaway! I've got a bunch of old handkerchiefs that could use some pizazz, great idea.
Your embroidery looks really great! As a fellow scooterist (I actually used to have a red one, too, until someone hit me on it), and crafty lady, this giveaway is right up my alley. I'm dying to try those markers that every other crafter online has seemingly been getting for free.
I haven't gotten out my embroidery in a while (I'm crocheting fortune cookies at the moment) but these look like scads of fun.
P.S. I just tweeted about the giveaway.
I love this idea to tint your embroidery! Have you tried washing it? How does the Sharpie tint hold up in the wash?
Awesome! These sharpies will take forever to be sold in my side of the world! I would like to use them on my converse and also make some stuff for/with my two little girls
Thanks!
And I´m a new follower!
Thanks!
These look really neat! This fall I'm mostly working on drawing more. I used to think I was just sucky at it but turns out I'm not. I guess my mom was right, practice makes perfect.
I love your little Vespa! I'm making Christmas presents these days, little backpacks for the kiddos!
I follow you!
oh boy, I have a ton of projects in the works right now! I'm making a wreath for the front door, and trying to get a jump-start on some Christmas gifts. I'm also working on a ton of wedding-related decor projects...but I could always use one more, so bring on those markers!

These look so neat! Right now I'm working on sewing an apron out of laminated cotton- it's my first time working with that sort of fabric and I was a bit intimidated, but so far it sews just like any other cotton.
These are great!! I have never gotten the hang of the crayon thing either, so it is nice to know there is an alternative!
I love the idea of filling in embroidery like this. I will definitely be trying it.

First of all I want to say I love your blog! I feel like you properly introduced me into the world of vintage craftiness. I love to use normal sharpies to decorate the CDs I make. And I'm sure I could find the tinted ones very useful.
-thanks for blogging regularly!
Oh, these are so pretty! I could use these to add cute little stuff to my sewing projects.
I hope Percy is doing okay!

Those are the coolest thing ever! I decorate my backpack, and those would be perfect (normal sharpies run in the threads of the fabric to much to make clean lines.)
Love these! What a great idea! The projects I'm working on this fall are cute patterned fabric flowers for my dreaded hair :) I'm going to see how big I can make them, they're going to look awesome! And I'm also going to attempt knitting my first sweater! Wish me luck!
I saw these in a shop the other day and I cannot stop thinking of things to do with them. First on the list is drawing colourful paisley all over a pair of jeans.

I'm working on a few quilts this fall
Lately I've been working on dream catchers.. Which are immensely fun especially since feathers are involved! I also just started on my first ever paint by number the other day which doesn't exactly count as a creative project since it really takes all the creativity out of painting but it feels good just to be painting again regardless... I've had those sharpie fabric markers on my amazon wish list for over a month but maybe I'll get to win them instead... :)
I am an OPB follower! OPB is actually one the first blog I ever followed!
Ooh goody! One of the many projects I'm working on this fall is sort of a cork board re-vamp! I found an old vintagey frame from good will that I painted cream. Now I just have to cover my cork with a fall-ish fabric! :) thanks so much for the lovely giveaway!
