Tutorial: Make a Perfect Espresso at Home!

Hello everyone!  As you all know, I'm so happy to be home after a long summer of traveling, but there are a few things I miss about life abroad - like the coffee!  Luckily, it's super easy to make an espresso at home, no fancy gadgets or expensive machines needed.

All you'll need are some espresso beans and a Moka coffee pot.  You can find the pot at just about any store with kitchen goods.  I have the two cup size, which is perfect size for making singles for Nate and I, or a double for myself!

Just like with a drip coffee maker, it's always best (but not required) to buy the beans whole and grind them yourself.  You'll want a fine-to-medium grind.

Step 1: Unscrew the top and bottom of the pot.  Pull the filter out of the bottom and fill it with coffee.  Fill the bottom of the pot with water up to the line (and not over the pressure release valve).

Step 2: Put the filter back into the pot, screw the top and bottom back together, and stick it on the stove over medium heat.

Step 3: After a few minutes, flip the lid open and you'll see that the top chamber has filled up with delicious coffee!  Keep in mind that you don't want the coffee to boil, so you might need to pull it off the heat before the top chamber has totally filled.  If you start to hear it gurgle, get it off the stove!

At this point you can add in some steamed milk for a cappuccino or macchiato, flavored syrups, or anything else you like.  I prefer to keep it simple and drink it just as it is.

I feel more awake already!  Maybe now I'll put on some makeup and do my hair (but more likely, not).

Have a great Wednesday!

Fun, Alli! I just did a post on how to press coffee! Isn't coffee the greatest? Espresso is one of my favorite things. I like to put a shot in my coffee sometimes and have a lovely extra boost ;-) Loving your photos by the way. I think it may be time for another cuppa!

oh gosh, you have no idea how much I wish I liked coffee. so much caffeine-y sweetness that I could really benefit from. I remember in Italy there were those little espresso booths all over the place and I felt so uncool because I wasn't all over them.

Aw, so many coffee-dislikers! I actually couldn't stand coffee before I started going to Italy. The culture of espresso bars drew me in. I still don't drink it everyday (I'm much more likely to reach for tea), but I love it as an occasional treat, especially on weekend mornings!

Thanks, ladies!

This is exactly the way I make it every morning. I have the same pot that I received as a birthday gift over 20 years ago!

I just started finally liking coffee over the summer and had more than my fair share of iced coffees. Now that it's getting cooler, I was looking for other things to try so I'll have to give this a shot!

Can a Moka pot be used on an electric stove burner?

Verdeacqua, now I'm intrigued! I'm going to have to ask some of my Napoletani friends.

Solange, I've never done it, but I don't see why not! Just make sure that the heat is medium to high.
