Nate and I spent the holiday weekend (which we extended through Tuesday - so nice!) in my hometown, visiting my family. On Sunday afternoon, we decided to brave the late summer heat and humidity and wander down the street to the county fair.

People who grew up in the city can have their fancy-pants state fairs; I'll always love the county fair best.

I'm always amazed by how little the fair changes. Year after year, there are the same food booths, the same games, the same rides (of questionable safety), the same farming families with their animals, the same rows of vegetables and preserves in the same old buildings. There's something sweetly nostalgic about it all.

By the time Nate and I had petted some animals, taken some photos, admired some vegetables, and eaten some fried food, the sky had gotten very overcast. The rain started as we were walking back to my parents' house, and two days later, it hasn't stopped yet. Along with the rain came cool breezes and the unmistakable smell of fall. Today I'm wearing boots, a sweater, and a scarf, and it feels like we might have seen the last of summer.
Did you go to the fair as a kid? Do you go as an adult? What do you think about it?

We just had our local fair this past weekend... and it was great! We brought the kids 2 nights in a row... and we were pooped!
An event our small town looks forward to ALL YEAR! :)

I like our State Fair. We have a lot of the same things as a county fair; vegetables, animals, art. There's just more food.
I love fall fairs! I used to go with my parents (even as an adult). Now they live in a different province, so it's a little harder to do this year. Hoping to still make it to a few.
I'm from Texas and we don't have a fair as far as I'm aware of. We do have the rodeo though. There's always something so exciting about going to the Rodeo. Listening to country music, watching calf roping, eating fried oreos and ridig the Ferris wheel. I've been going since Middle School and have not missed a year. The first band I ever saw perform was Bon Jovi at the Rodeo. It's a tradition for me to go, and I know the first year I'll have to miss it will be heart wrenching.
this reminds me of a fair in my hometown, too. It's always been a tradition :) love the pictures, they brought back a ton of memories for me!
We had a fair and rodeo that was on the Calgary Stampede circuit so it was pretty awesome for a small town way up north - totally the highlight of the summer.
i also love small county fairs. i remember participating by entering the competitions with an apron i made, a drawing, or my horse. :-) where is washington county.
Been going to fairs for more than 50 years, small or big, you can't beat the exhibits (I like the more rural, country kind), the rides, the people watching, even the commercial booths where sometimes you get great deals and sometimes you just shake your head and wonder, 'Who would buy that!?'.
the animal exhibits are BEST..either looking or competing/showing. You can't beat sleeping in the barns or the sadness of auctioning an animal you have raised.
The county fair is THE BEST! I grew up on a sheep farm, and have never even been to the state fair, which is OK with me. I do, however, recommend the International Livestock Exhibition in Louisville, KY every November. The animals are so awesome to look at and the people watching is equally good.
