Meet autumn's creative goal:

This pretty camera was a sweet gift from Nate's uncle. He's also a photography lover, but after switching to digital had stopped shooting with his 35mm SLRs. He knew that I have an interest in film photography, so he passed two cameras - this classic Canon AE-1 and a Pentax K1000 - on to me.

Full disclosure: he actually gave me these cameras last year. I intended to start shooting with them right away, but found myself a little intimidated without the crutch of an LCD screen to check exposures. What a wimp!

Last week I decided that I'd had enough of being intimidated; it was time to start shooting. Being a Canon girl, of course I chose to tackle the AE-1 first. I pulled out the camera and its manual, popped on a 50mm lens, and started practicing. After a few days, it still takes me a little while to set up a shot, but I'm finding that the camera's not nearly as scary as it seemed at first.

My goal for fall is to shoot and shoot and shoot (and shoot) until it becomes second nature. Luckily this camera is so lovely that I want to take it everywhere with me! I'll be sure to share photos here when I start getting prints back.
Do you have any creative goals for the new season?

More actual drawing, rather than designing.
Good for you tackling a film camera - people are always telling me that anyone can take a good photo in these days of digital cameras, but that's not the same thing as being a good photographer; a good photographer can take a good photo without an LCD screen. I bet it's second nature for you soon.
such a great goal! i love it - and i want this camera :)
This is brilliant! I want to play more with film also. My dad has several amazing SLR cameras that he is willing to let me play with. I think this season is the time to take advantage of the offer! I can't wait to see your photos!

I learned to take pictures on my parent's old Pentax SLR that had no auto-focus - some of my pictures were blurry, but totally awesome nonetheless! My goal for fall is to sew my maternity wardrobe this time around. Yoga pants got way old last time.
Those camera's do look intimidating! My creative goal has been to take an art class & this evening I started my Drawing & Painting class :)
Oooh, love this! Especially the strap!

I LOVE my Canon AE-1, even though I shoot Nikon digitally. I found with my Canon that the light meter is slightly off, so I sometimes have to fidget my exposure a little to get it right, or use an external light meter. You may not have this issue, but if you do, I find it typically UNDER exposes, so I stop up once to correct. I hope you post some of your shots!
Thanks, everyone - I can't wait to get some photos developed!
Kate, isn't the strap awesome? I'm in love with it! I kind of want a scarf in the same pattern.
Marizabeth, thanks for the tip! I'll see how it does on the exposure. There was an external light meter in the camera bag, so maybe that's a clue that this one also has some exposure issues.
That's an awesome goal! I hope you have lots of fun! I can't wait to see some of your photos.
How exciting, those old 35mm take the best photos :)
Thanks, girls! I hope the shots turn out well!
I started photography shooting black and white on a camera older than me... but after three years I switched to digital and haven't gone back.
Can't wait to see some of your film shots though!
Chic on the Cheap
i have a pentax k1000 and i loooooove it. i know that the canon is the one that all blogger girls seem to swoon over, but my pentax is the best! have fun with the cameras!
I've had an olympus OM-10 for ages now but I'm scared to use it - mainly because it seems so much more complicated than my other 35mm cameras... even though I'm sure its not. Perhaps my goal should be to use mine more (though it would mean using my others less...)
I love my Canon AE-1! My grandma gave it to me a year or so ago, and I've used it SO MUCH. It takes beautiful photos and the CLUNK of pushing the shutter button is so satisfying. If you check out Erin at My Beautiful Disaster, she just got one too. Maybe you guys can use each other for inspiration.
Oh lovely camera, I have hear a lot of good things about this camera!! Sweet!!
I also have the same canon and was given it as a gift and was so intimidated. Im still learning but find it is an amazing camera, I carried it everywhere with me on my most recent trip to London. Hopefully it is as kind to you as it has been to me!
