Naples is not usually thought of as one of Italy's nicest cities. In fact, it tends to have a pretty rough reputation, and if people stop there while touring Italy, they usually move through as quickly as possible. It's too bad, because Naples is actually a vibrant and cosmopolitan city, and features some of the most beautiful architecture in all of Italy. I enjoy my life in little Pompei, but I have to admit, I'm a city person at heart, and love having a city nearby to escape to every once and awhile.

The streets are quiet in the afternoon, but start to wake up around 5pm, and are totally packed by 8pm.

There's some great vintage shopping, especially for records and books.

A few beautiful shopping galleries provide relief from the heat and the crowded streets.

Naples is heavily graffitied, and while there are plenty of artless tags, many of the pieces can be beautiful.

If you visit Naples, you should treat it like any city and stay aware of your belongings and your surroundings at all times (I recommend a bag with a zipper and long strap that you can wear across your body), but don't let it's reputation scare you into missing it!
I'm an archaeologist who lives in America during the year, but travels to Italy and Greece to conduct research every summer. I'm currently living and working in (and blogging from) Pompei, Italy, where I spend my days digging up the ancient city.
Naples is a city with a long history, but always manages to feel particularly modern.

thanks for the vicarious mini-vacation!
I am really enjoying your posts about Italy, i would love to go there x
I wish we could have spent more time in Italy when we went to Europe in March. We only got to do Rome, Venice and Florence. They were nice but there is so much more I want to see. Hopefully one day we will go back.
Hey Alli, I just got back from an intensive course in Venice, and your little posts are fantastic as I didn't get to see much more of Italy. Isn't it just beautiful? I can't believe you go every year! I'm incredibly jealous! x
Thanks for sharing these photos, Alli! I wanted to visit my family there this summer so badly, but the plane tickets were way too pricey. Because of you, I feel like I just had a mini vacay. :)
