Weekend Roller Derby

roller derby 23

This weekend we had an awesome time cheering the Cincinnati Roller Girls to a crushing victory over Nashville in their season home opener.  I'm not a sports person at all, but roller derby is so much fun to watch - it's fast-paced, upbeat, and has a great element of showmanship.  Being a hardcore feminist, of course I love the girl-power aspect too.

The victory was in no small part due to the awesome skating of Hop Devil, who scored 19 points (to Nashville's zero) in her first jam, and continued to destroy from there.

This particular devil is one of my colleagues and friends - she's a fellow archaeologist and spent a summer digging with me in a particularly challenging trench in Pompeii (it tends to create close relationships!).  It was so fun to see her in her other persona (check out those arm muscles!).

Hop Devil's girlfriend, Sk8 Crime, was also amazing - it's hard to believe that someone so sweet in real life can be so terrifying on the track!

You known I had to have a snowcone (on a related note, can you believe that they now charge $3.50 for high fructose corn syrup and ice?  Insanity).

Do you have a local roller derby team?  Have you ever been to a game?  If not, I highly recommend it!  For anyone in the Cincinnati area, you can check out the CRG home game schedule and buy tickets at their website.  Nate and I will probably be at every game this season - look for us ringside, where he will be screaming like a maniac (seriously, I'm surprised he could talk at all on Sunday) and I will be snapping away with my camera!

Have a good Tuesday!

One of my old fencing friends is on the Cinci team! Such weird connections online. Almost thought I had clicked on the wrong blog when I saw the pictures (she has one about their rescue dogs)!

Epic! My new town has a Roller Derby team, and I have been meaning to go see a match for ages, but I swear every night there are other mandatory events in my life - HA. I would love to join...but should probably get better health insurance first...*wink wink* Looks like sooo much fun; thanks for sharing!

Love,

Ahh I <3 Roller Derby! I actually founded the league in my town... unfortunately due to my work schedule I haven't been able to skate with them in a long time... :( Sad face.

aw, as a former Nashvillian I'm sad they lost! Sounds like you guys had an awesome time. I love Roller Derby!

p.s. Huzzah! It's nice to hear someone else who's not afraid to say, "I'm a hardcore feminist."

I would love to see a live Roller Derby match. I have several friends who took up the sport, but live on the other side of the States. It looks like a good shooting challenge for photogs!

i love roller derby! I actually attended a boot camp for the dayton team, but in the end decided that while i love to skate, and truly love the sport, i'm not so fond of getting knocked off me skates! oh, well! I still love to cheer them on :)

Our CCRG girls have their first bout this Sunday night. Strangely enough my 2 best friends who just left the team are Archaeologists as well. Roller Derby is the ultimate sport for women, getting to kick butt and look cute!

I love roller derby!!! I really want to play but I bruise really easy and I have bad knees so I am not allowed. My friend plays in the Gold Coast league and we go and watch them and the Brisbane league as well sometimes. It's great fun!!!

I really want to go to a roller derby match. A good friend of the family is a real estate agent by day, and a Denver Roller Doll by night.
