What I Wore: The Yellow Pants

1-28-2011

1-28-2011 2

Yellow cords: Gap, Hebron Gap Outlet
Grey silk camp shirt: Splendid, Hebron Gap Outlet
Boyfriend cardigan: Gap, Hebron Gap Outlet
Belt: thrifted
Socks: H&M
Moccasins: Minnetonka
Jewelry: wedding rings, initial necklace

The story of these yellow cords and I begins over a year ago, when I spotted them on the sale rack at the Gap.  I tried them on (they were yellow pants, how could I NOT?) and hemmed/hawed in the dressing room for awhile.  They were $20, which made them moderately pricey by the standards of my wardrobe, and although they had caught my eye, I wasn't really sure how I felt about them.  I had no idea how I was going to style yellow pants, and in the end, I left them on the rack.  Basically, they were Mr. Darcy and I was Elizabeth Bennett, rejecting them based on a prejudiced opinion of what colors can be worn as pants (okay, so it's not exactly the same as Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth's situation, but bear with me here).

In the next few months, the yellow pants stayed on my mind.  I occasionally saw them on stylish girls online, and once or twice spotted people wearing them on the street.  Everytime they caught my eye, I was filled with remorse and regret.  Why did I let the yellow pants slip away?  What was I thinking?  Why couldn't I look past my prejudice and see how much I could come to love them?  (note: I might be exaggerating my emotional response slightly for greater dramatic impact.  Isn't it better this way?)

Which brings us to a few weeks ago, after I had long given up on the yellow pants (but still remembered them fondly).  What did I spy on the $4.99 pants rack at the Hebron Gap Outlet?  The yellow pants!  And in my size!  The only pair in the store!  It was meant to be.  After a year apart, the two of us were united, together forever.

Except...now I'm not sure how to style them.  Yes, my original concern has proven true, although I can handle a mustard skirt, bright yellow pants have proven to be more of a challenge.  Do you think this happened to Elizabeth Bennett, too?   After the double wedding, did Darcy turn out to be obnoxiously prideful?  I sure hope not.

So anyway, here are the yellow pants, worn with a collection of neutrals.  I think it worked better in real life than it looks in the photos, but it definitely wasn't a home run.  I would love to hear your opinions on this one - how would you style up the yellow pants?

I have those pants! I got them on the sale rack last year, but I think they were $10 so I deemed them too cheap to pass up.

Looks good! In general I would steer away from brown, and more towards greys. Brown with yellow or orange can just look super 70s.

I say wear them with a color! Soft pink or blue or purple!

Wow! I adore the yellow pants. You pulled together a very interesting looking outfit. The neutrals play well with the bright yellow pants, and give them the room to shine. Glad you were finally able to get them. You look great :D

Ha ha! Love the Pride and Prejudice reference!

The yellow pants are cute! Maybe if you wore boots over them that would be cute-- especially if you're worried about too much yellow.

I love how you styled them, I really want some but I doubt I would ever be brave enough to actually wear them...

I love yellow and grey together. That shade would also look good with navy blue and red like someone mentioned above (love that color combo), or with a deep dark teal/peacock blue.

Love these! I (having a closet FULL of prints) would pair these with any floral, plaid or striped print you have!! Treat the yellow just as you would the blue of your denim. You will find it goes well with just about anything.

Wow, what are the chances?
I guess I would style them with gray, like you did. Maybe try a black belt instead of a brown one...

I actually own a very similar pair of yellow cords from Old Navy. I usually wear mine with grey or grey and purple. A shirt I have that goes really well with them is grey with purple and red flower print. I love how you styled yours!

It took me a second to process that there is only one Hebron Gap outlet. Then I realized we're from the same area! I always get so excited when I find awesome Cincinnatians! I'm the intern over at Red Velvet right now, but I go to UC and I'm from nky! YAY!

I love the look, and I think you styled them really well. I'd probably use a different colour belt, but I still love the whole look.
