One of my favorite spots on the internet is the Photojojo Store. Seriously, I will take one of everything, please and thank you. I recently saw and fell instantly in love with their Polaroid One Step iPhone skin (although it now seems to be missing from the store, oh no!). Then I realized something: an iPhone skin is pretty darn similar to a DIY vinyl sticker An idea was born.

*Because I'm a Mac person, I've aimed this tutorial at Apple products, but PC/Windows/Android/Kindle/Nook/etc. users don't need to feel left out - Google a template for your own device, or simply make your own by tracing.
What you'll need: your electronic device; a skin template (this one comes from Sticker Mule - a company that makes really cool custom stickers and skins - I kind of want to make some OPB Studios skins after discovering this!); contact paper; scissors; X-acto knife; Sharpies.

Step 2: trace your template onto a piece of contact paper (I'm using my favorite Faux Bois paper - I never get sick of this stuff!).

Step 3: use an x-acto knife to make any necessary cuts inside the template.

Step 4: cut inside your tracing lines, and apply the skin to your device! You don't need to stress about this step - contact paper is almost infinitely reposition-able, so if you don't get it on quite right, just peel it off and re-stick. It won't leave any residue behind. Does it get any easier than that?

Step 5 (optional): for extra fun, add some doodles with Sharpie!

That's it! Now you have a cute, personalized device. This is such a cheap and easy project that you can easily make multiples and rotate them. I think I'm going to look for some white contact paper next and try drawing my own Polaroid skin - do you think I can make it look like an SX-70?
*Note: the skin will probably protect your device from some scratching and wear, but this project is definitely decorative, rather than protective. I recommend covering your device with a minimalistic clear case to keep it safe. I have a great one from Incase that snaps on right over the skin and looks nearly invisible - my phone is wearing it in the top picture of this post.
If you try out this tutorial, I'd love to see the end result - email me a photo or upload it to the OPB Projects Flickr group!

So cool! My husband actually just did this with the *exact* same contact paper and his iphone. My case isn't clear, so I can't do it :( I never thought of doodling on it, though!
So creative. I linked to your site here:http://asnailslife.wordpress.com/

This is such a great idea! I've discovered the wonders of woodgrain contact paper. I covered my point & shoot!
This is so strange just last night I had the idea to do this and was going to fumble my way through it today, cutting by hand.
Thanks for the template link!! :)

Wow! Simply cool handy craft work. I love to do it by my self. Thanks for you post.
I would love to do this to my iPod but I don't know where to find contact paper. Does anyone know any good websites that has good contact paper?
I love it! It's like getting my iPhone a diamond peel.
