Tutorial: One Hour* iPad** sleeve

ipad cover small

I think sleek electronics look best when protected by something handmade and a little bit sweet.  I made this iPad cover yesterday during a crafty afternoon with my friend E.  The basic DIY technique will work if you need a case or cover for just about any flat-ish electronic device: iPad, iPod, phone, computer, whatever; and it's quick enough that you can whip up a whole fleet of them in a day.

What you'll need: 1. Outer fabric.  Something thick is good; I went with corduroy (those of you who participated in the Marie skirt Sew-along will recognize this!).  2.  Lining fabric.  Use something soft and lightweight; a thrifted sheet is perfect.  3. Light to medium weight fusible interfacing.  4.  Basic sewing and cutting tools.

Step 1: Cut your fabric: 2 pieces of the outer fabric 9.5x12"; 2 pieces of lining fabric 9.5x11"; 2 pieces of interfacing 8x10" (adjust sizes for other electronics. For most flat-ish things this should work: outer fabric - width+2", height+2.5"; lining - W+2", H+1.5"; interfacing W+.5, H+.5).

Step 2: Fuse your interfacing to the wrong side of your lining fabric, following the manufacturers directions.  Position the interfacing pieces about 3/4" from the sides and bottom of the lining pieces.

Step 3: Take one piece of outer fabric and one piece of lining fabric and place them WRONG sides together (so the interfacing will be sandwiched between the two fabrics).  Fold over the top inch of the outer fabric and stitch it in place.  Repeat with the other two pieces of fabric.

Step 4: Place your outer fabric RIGHT sides together.  Stitch around the three raw edges, leaving about .5" seam allowance.  To keep the top edges neatly lined up, stitch the two long edges first, starting from the top on each edge.  Then stitch across the bottom (this also reinforces the corners).  Trim seam allowance down to .25", using pinking shears if you are worried about fraying.

Flip your sleeve inside out and press.  Ta-da!  Quick and simple protection for your precious electronics!

Going to make this but adding a piece of ribbon at the top to tie shut on one and a button and loop on another. Thanks for the tutorial!

I know this is almost a year old, but thanks so much for posting it. I just made one in black with cream-colored lining for my father's birthday. It's the first real sewing project I've finished (I have a skirt half-done) and it came out great. Thanks!
