We usually don't let July fourth pass here without doing a little something to celebrate. Our team is international, but many of the non-Americans live in America during the year, and everyone is happy to eat hamburgers (or veggie burgers, in my case!) and fruit salad. This year we had an added bonus, though - an evening concert of Verdi arias performed in the ancient theater at Pompeii. This is a new initiative at the site; there's a performance of some sort nearly every weekend this summer, and I'm hoping to make it to most of them. Although I spend every day in the ancient city, this was my first time visiting at night, and it was really magical!

I'm an archaeologist who lives in America during the year, but travels to Italy and Greece to conduct research every summer. I'm currently living and working in (and blogging from) Pompei, Italy, where I spend my days digging up the ancient city.
