Dreamy Weekend

Last weekend, I had one of those strange experiences in which I seemed to step out of real life and into a dream.  I travelled to one of the most beautiful cities I've ever seen and had dinner at the most incredible villa overlooking the sea.  Among my companions (all of whom were totally amazing and fun) were a former Broadway and Hollywood actress, a World War II hero, and an opera composer.  Their stories were full of names like Betty Grable, Marilyn Monroe, the king and queen of England, Gary Cooper, and Cecil B. DeMille.  Oh yes, and did I mention that Fellini used to visit the villa during the days of the Dolce Vita, sit on the very same terrace where we sat, and eat dinner off of the very same dishes that we used?  Yup, he did.

What was really amazing about the experience for me was that our hosts, who were in their 90s, were as fascinated with our lives and experiences as we were with theirs.  They especially loved our iPads, haha!

Here's to dreamy weekends, wherever you might spend them.

I'm an archaeologist who lives in America during the year, but travels to Italy and Greece to conduct research every summer.  I'm currently living and working in (and blogging from) Pompei, Italy, where I spend my days digging up the ancient city.

their has only been a QUEEN in BRITAIN for the last few hundred years. no sign of a king and queen of england. just saying. nice photos :)

Anon, the King I am speaking of is George VI, who ruled in England in the early 20th century until his death in the 1950s (the husband of the deceased Queen Elizabeth, father to the current Queen). My host was a hero in WWII, and had met the King several times before his death.
