And Sometimes I Work...

I know that based on my recent posts, I appear to spend most of my summer lazing about southern Italy in gorgeous seaside towns.  In reality, however, I spend almost all of my time working while I'm here - digging on site during the day; documenting, analyzing, and interpreting at night.

See?  Hard at work.  Obviously, cuddling with site dogs is a very important part of the job (especially when the dogs are as cute as this one).

Happy Wednesday, everyone - I hope you are all having great weeks!

PS - interested in adopting one of Pompeii's site dogs?  Details are here!
PPS - thanks to my team member B. for the photo!

I'm an archaeologist who lives in America during the year, but travels to Italy and Greece to conduct research every summer.  I'm currently living and working in (and blogging from) Pompei, Italy, where I spend my days digging up the ancient city.

thats an amazing job!!! My friend wanted to do archeology at uni but if your irish its a bit crap cuz theres not much work here. Theres only really been 2 archeological digs here in the past 4 years.. which isnt much. And i only knew about them because I was managing the photo lab the government printed all the slides through!

Aren't you afraid the dogs might bite or be sick? I'm just curious because I wouldn't pick up a random dog, even though I like dogs.

I'm glad you all enjoy the silly photo as much as the pretty ones! I have to admit, my job is pretty awesome.

Anonymous, I know all of the site dogs very well, so even though they are strays, they definitely aren't just random dogs to me. If my lease would allow it, I'd probably bring home at least one every summer!

I'm anon above. I clicked on the link and was amazed by the many dogs of different breeds! Found this blog linked from some other blog, and it's just what I like, finding out about the world. Take care, and I hope you find something really amazing!

I spent one day in Pompei...one day was just not enough! I think of going back all the time. Lucky you to be able to work and live there for a time.

As I recall there were some pretty fun dogs there. We had one follow us around for a while...he obviously knew who the suckers were.

Good luck and enjoy your time!

Although it seems that that's just an ordinary day on the job, I find this fascinating!!! I wanted to be an archaeologist when I was younger. I'm still mildly curious about the field, but taking Geology 101 in college kinda killed my interest :( Oh well, this post has inspired me to read up on it some more and get a better idea of what it's really like, thanks!
