Thank you all for the birthday wishes!! I had a great weekend settling in at Pompeii, spending time with friends, visiting my favorite restaurants, and getting ready this year's excavation season. We started work today and I'm thrilled with what we accomplished - it would be hard to ask for a better start. The only problem is how out of shape I am; I'm SO SORE after a day of digging! Oh well, it's hard to complain about anything when this is the view I have from my apartment balcony - Mt. Vesuvius looking absolutely beautiful at sunset.

That view is stunning. Growing up in a state where there aren't any mountains, nothing makes me feel farther away from home (in a good way) than a sight like that. Enjoy your time there!
