I've been very remiss with tutorials lately - I have them in my head, but just haven't gotten around to posting them! In order to get back on the horse, here's a quick one for a really fun and versatile technique: stenciling with Sharpies and doilies!
What you'll need: a paper doily, a Sharpie, something to stencil on (I'm using some cardstock, but you can do this with anything that Sharpie will stick to).

Step 1: Place your doily on the surface you'd like to stencil. Hold it down firmly (I find this easier than taping, especially for intricate doilies that don't have good taping spots), and begin to color in the open spaces. For larger spaces, trace around the outside of the shape, then fill in the center. Press lightly with the Sharpie to fill in small holes.

You can lift up to check your progress, if you'd like (just use what you've filled in as a guide to set it back down in the proper spot) - on porous materials like paper, the bleed of the sharpie gives the final image a really pretty, soft quality.
Step 2: Continue until you've filled in all of the open spaces.

Step 3: Lift your doily away, and you're done! I told you it was simple!

For a different look, you can also trace a line around the outside of the doily. I think this gives the pattern a slightly lacier feel.

That's all there is to it! I'll be back this afternoon to share a project that I made this weekend using this technique.

Clever and Simple-I never would have thought of that! Jana
I have Mother's Day cards to make this week I will be using this idea, thanks for sharing.
Neat! Thanks for showing how to do this.
super clever use of doilies + sharpies. You're a total genius.
These would be great for making snowflake Christmas cards as well, if you varied what you trace a few times! Have you ever done it with the metallic sharpies?
Thanks, everyone!
D&D, I haven't tried it with paint, but I don't see why it wouldn't work (especially if you used spraypaint, since it's less likely to soak through the doily).
Laura, I love the idea of making snowflake cards with this technique! It would be so pretty with silver sharpie on a dark blue background.
Wow, that loks like a lot of work.
But its worth it!
Pretty!!

Oh wow I love it and I just happen to have bought a massive packet of doilies. Thank you thank you for this simple but brilliant idea!
So pretty....and JUST in time for Mom's Day cards!!! Thanks!
That is such a lovely idea and the sharpies give a much richer color than the mists I usually use! You could use Elmers spray adhesive to hold it in place, it peels away quite easily. Thanks for sharing!
I love this idea and the simplicity of it! Thanks for the tutorial :D

So creative! I'll be sure to include this in my week in review on Saturday!

Can you tell me where to get these cute doilies? The ones I found had a solid center, so they weren't NEARLY as cute. Thanks for any info! Or feel free to contact me if any of you have a TON and would like to sell some to me. :)
I found this tutorial through pinterest and linked back in a blogpost of mine. Thank you for this cool idea!
