Oscar Night

I was still feeling pretty sick (and extremely bitter about it!) on Oscar night, but we (read: Nate; I spent most of Sunday asleep on the couch) managed to throw a great party anyway. I was too busy placing dime bets and horribly losing our Oscar pool to take many pictures (why oh why do I always vote for what I want to win, rather than what I think will win?), but I wanted to share our major crafty project of the party - etched cocktail glasses! Our theme this year was 'Classic Cocktails,' and we sent each guest home with an Oscars 2010 cocktail glass featuring their name etched on the base. Nate did this pretty much on his own - he's good with the Armour Etch!

Nate also put together an awesome appetizer spread: hand-cured gravlax, pan-seared steak with some sort of delicious sauce on top, mini caesar salads, puff pastry with cheesy goodness inside, sweet and spicy cashews, plus a yummy cheese plate. Not too shabby.

I thought the broadcast itself was decent, although there weren't nearly enough montages. I *love* montages of all forms. The John Huges tribute was excellent, but I wasn't happy with the presentation of the Best Original Score nominees - sure, the dancers were fantastic, but this is the Oscars, and the Oscars should be about movies. Stick with montages! Plus, both Farah Fawcett and Patrick McGoohan were left out of the dead person montage; what's up with that, Oscar producers?

Of course, in the realm of favorite things about the Oscars, the fashion follows closely behind the montages. This year, I was proud to see that the younger generation really brought it. In fact, my favorite dresses of the night were all on young attendees. I even liked Miley Cyrus' dress - I thought it was age appropriate, cute, and perfectly trendy for a teen - I just want to fire whoever fit her into it. The bodice was *way* too short and *way* too tight; people are giving her a hard time about her posture, but if she had stood up straight, I'm afraid there would have been some serious exposure issues. Definitely not ideal for live television.

So who were my favorites of the night?

1. Anna Kendrick. Go Jessica from Twilight! I was proud to see that she didn't repeat her Golden Globes mistake and show up in something that totally overwhelmed her. I love the softness and drape of this dress, and think the color looks beautiful with her hair. While I'm not a fan of the chunky shoes, her hair and makeup look so perfect that I'm willing to forgive the foot clunk.

2. Carey Mulligan. Another attendee who could have gone with something super crazy and/or poorly fitted, and instead made a great choice. I usually prefer color to black, but I love the cut and sparkle of this dress. Also, some of the beading is apparently shaped like little scissors and silverware - cute! Again, I'd like to rip the clunky shoes off of her feet and put her in something delicate, but C'est la vie.

3. Kristen Stewart. I think my jaw dropped when I saw Kristen on the red carpet. Her dress is GORGEOUS. In fact, it might be my overall favorite of the night. The pleating is intricate without being overwhelming or stiff, the color is beautiful, and it fits her perfectly. Add in the lovely hair and makeup, and you definitely have a jaw drop situation. Very impressive for someone who usually shows up to events looking like she woke up late for Geometry and was forced to run out of the house half dressed and unshowered.

4. Finally, Gabourey Sidibe. Who didn't love her on Sunday night? While I think I might have preferred her dress without the appliques (although I'm not certain - I think I'd have to see it both ways to decide), the color and cut are both perfection. I also love her hair; it's so Hollywood glam! Plus, it was simply nice to see a different body type on the red carpet, especially when Gabby herself was so adorable and hilarious (you know you loved the "money shot" comment). I really hope that she's back next year.

What did you all think of this year's broadcast and fashion?

My fave for the night was Sandra Bullock. Her dress was amazing!

I have to say that Kristen always looks like a fish out of the water. Her dress was beautiful but she did not look comfortable in it. She looks odd--not her style at all.

Now what was up with Charlize theron's dress? It was terrible.

Aww a party with etched glasses & a cheeseboard?! I need to up my game! I lurrrrve the fit & overall look of Carey's dress - haven't seen a proper close-up of the hardware on the dress yet, but it sounds lush :D

Oh, I did not like that weird half-floor-length thing Casey and Zoe Saldana had going on...I guess that's just a personal thing, haha! I think my favorite dresses of the night were Rachel McAdams's and Demi Moore's. I'm sure there were others but those I remember for sure. Of course, I was distracted the whole time keeping an eye out for Chris Pine, hehe.

I also loved the dance thing! Haha. To each her own!

Oh yes, Sandra looked beautiful. I didn't adore her dress, but her hair and makeup were dead on, and the gown was lovely up on stage. Plus, her speech was fantastic.

Ugh, what was Charlize Theron thinking? Lumpy boob rosettes? Never a good choice.

I need to find a close-up of Carey's dress; I haven't seen it yet!

If you haven't tried glass etching, you should - it's one of those crafts where the results look much more impressive than the process warrants, haha!

I LOVED Meryl Streep's dress. She always looks so classy and not overdone. Plus, basic white. Who else could have pulled that off I ask you? We (my husband and I [not the royal we]) went to an oscar party too, and the biggest comment of the night was "Wow...Demi Moore must have the best plastic surgeon in Hollywood!"

Oh my goodness, you throw an awesome Oscar bash! I'm so impressed. We're total cheese and nut freaks at our house, so I'm drooling over your pictures right now!

I agree with you - all of these ladies looked lovely. I also loved Kate Winslet's hair and makeup. She always looks so pretty.

I also missed the montages. The John Hughes tribute was one of my top moments, but there needed to be more of them!
