Three Style School Projects

Apparently I'm into numbered lists lately.

1. Pom-pom flowers. I've loved these forever and don't know why I've never made any - they are so quick and easy. I kept these minimalistic in shades of brown and oatmeal (one solid and one heather of each). I'm thinking of making a second set in bright colors, for times when I'm in the mood for a little more pop!

2. Stamps. I've tried stamp carving before, and am fully aware that it is *not* one of my particular talents. I think I'm too impatient for it, plus I try to do it while watching TV and inevitably slice off an important part of the stamp I'm working on. These designs are super simple and their execution is nothing to write home over (by the way, I love that phrase), but they were fun to make: two Polaroid frames, and a speech bubble, plus "thank you" and "OPB" text.

3. I'm still not sure about this wreath. I like the scalloped felt and wool (inspired by a wreath made by Rachel Denbow that I can't find a photo of right now), but I don't know if the embellishments are really working. The vintage clip-on earrings along the bottom (attached with straight pins) look a little haphazard, and I keep going back and forth about the ribbon at the top. I might try a different arrangement of the earrings - maybe make felt "flowers" with an earring at the center of each one? Do you have any suggestions?

What do you do when you get stuck creatively while working on a project?

Love the stamps! I've never done stamp carving before, but I have made some geometric ones by glueing little wood blocks onto a bigger woodblock. Something to try someday.

I really like the concepts of the wreath--especially the earrings--and I agree that it needs something, I'm just not sure what. Maybe a bow in addition to the hanging loop? Your felt flowers idea sounds good, too. I'd love to see what you come up with.

I'm so thrilled about your projects! I'm about to move to a new place (my first place!) and I'm going to be stealing your ideas to decorate it!

cute stuff!!

i like the wreath a lot, but i think the ribbon isn't the right color - maybe something in a different color family or crisp like white?? i like the earrings, but think you are right that felt flowers would be good. you can use them to break up the circle a bit - so they kind of extend over the sides if that makes sense??

I love the pom pom flowers! My partner has very minimalist tastes so this would satisfy me (crafty) and him too (minimalistic). I'll have to give it a go! And yay for stamp carving! It does get easier with practice but you'll always slice parts off if you do it while watching tv. I still do - you'd think I'd know better by now!

The pom pom flowers are so cute, and perhaps a darker ribbon for the wreath?

Aw, thanks everyone! It's been a bit of a difficult day, so your sweet comments have really picked me up. Nicole, I really like your idea of using the "flowers" to break up the wreath shape. Holly, I'm glad to hear that even you occasionally slice off parts that you don't mean to - you are the master!

Oooh, pretty! Can you please point me toward a simple pom pom flower tutorial? I'm looking into fake flowers right now that aren't, you know, cheesy silk or whatever. Your pom poms look perfect!

Thanks for the pom-pom tute, as I was just about to ask! The wreath is pretty amazing - I love the simplicity and the earring placement. Don't change it! I think it could stand a different colored hanging ribbon though - a more saturated color like teal or maybe mustard. Craft on!
