- 1.5 yards (sizes 34, 36) or 1.75 yards (sizes 38-44) of heavy weight fabric.
- Matching thread
- 8" iron-on interfacing (about the same weight as your fabric)
- One 8" zipper (or something close - I'll show you how to make your zipper fit the pattern perfectly, no matter what size it is)
- A zipper foot for your sewing machine
- Basic sewing tools: a sewing machine, scissors, straight pins, seam ripper (with the hope that you won't need to use it), tailor's chalk or a disappearing ink pen, machine needles, iron and ironing board, spray bottle with water (optional for ironing)
- Scotch tape
A note on fabric:
This skirt is meant to be structural, so it will look best in a nice, heavy fabric. I made my first version in a lightweight corduroy, and it didn't look so hot. Burdastyle recommends taffeta, but personally I'd be a little nervous about that, because taffeta is difficult to work with and you'll end up with a finished product that is super high maintenance (I like clothes that can be thrown in the washer and dryer with no worries). I'd recommend brocades, heavy suitings or corduroys, or even something from from the upholstery section. This skirt would also look awesome in something like a vintage barkcloth, if you're lucky enough to have some. To test your fabric, try folding some pretend pleats with your hands - does it look them fairly well, or does it look droopy and sad? If it looks and feels good to you, then go with it!
For some fabric inspiration, you can check out finished Maries on the Burdastyle website.
So what fabric am I using? I found this gorgeous mustard corduroy (nice and heavy!) for $1.50 while thrifting last month. I hope it will make a pretty Marie!

When you get a chance, stop by the Flickr group and upload a photo of your own fabric!

As soon as I can get my machine fixed or a new one, I am going to make this skirt. I love making skirts. The ones that I've made are my favorite items in my wardrobe.

Hi Alli, just a quick question for non US... sizes are american or european? Thanks a lot, looking forward to start and to have the time to write about myself on the flickr group!
Great fabric...I have a soft spot for Cury colored things at the moment. I have some lovely 3" kimono cherry blossom ribbon in that color...YUM!
I am using Charcoal gray, another soft spot!
Hoping to go get my fabric today. I want something with a nice pattern...
I'm so happy that everyone is excited!
Sara, there's more info on sizing in today's post. The sizes are European, but check the Burdastyle sizing chart to be sure of your size.
Miss Alli, may I please join your sew along? I might actually get a piece of clothing done if I do it in a sew along at a nice easy pace!
Holly xx
Absolutely Miss Holly! I'll add you to the list!
Yay!
