Tutorial: Simple Crochet Head Band

I noticed in the Twitter giveaway that many of you shared one of my creative goals for 2010 - to learn how to crochet. So, I thought you might like to try out this simple crochet project. It can be finished in no time at all and will help you practice the all-important chain stitch!

I love the look of headbands, but almost never wear them. The plastic ones dig into my head and give me a headache, while the elastic ones slide back and pop off (and they are a bit too sporty for my style anyway). Enter the crocheted head band! It stays in place and is comfy enough to wear all day. Plus, it's a great way to use up yarn ends. Yay!

Step 1: Measure around your head, starting and finishing at the base of your neck. Add about 10 inches to that measurement (you don't have to be exact).

Step 2:
Crochet three chains that are the length of your measurement. If you need help with chaining, check out the great resources on Pip's post here. Leave several inches of yarn at the end of each side of your chain.

Step 3: Tie your three chains together by knotting the spare yarn on each side.

Step 4
(optional): Using a yarn needle, weave the yarn ends back up into your chain on each side.

That's it - now tie your new headband around your head and wear it with pride! You can also add embellishments if you'd like - I think it would be cute with a crocheted flower or a little doily stitched to one side. Have fun!

Yes Alli, I share the crochet goal too. I have mastered the chain stitch, it's moving on from there that I can't seem to retain instructions for. I learn a new stitch then my sieve for a brain loses it again. Think that means I need more practice.

Great headband! Love your polaroid photos, they're gorgeous. I'm terrible at photography so I'm always jealous of anyone who can take a photo :)
