Back from California

Wow, that was a long internet break. I'd hoped to find free wireless somewhere in the conference hotel, but alas, there was nothing. In the end, I think I actually enjoyed the limitation of not having the internet - it was nice to interact with people face-to-face. I'm happy to be back, though, since I've missed all of you!

So after five days of living and breathing archaeology, what am I thinking about today?

Hair! Okay, it's not very academic, but I've suddenly been struck with a burning desire to grow my hair out. It's been short for a few years now, and I'm tired of it. I want to pull my hair up in a bun and wear it in a messy ponytail. I want to get out of bed with a sloppy halo around my head and get frustrated untangling it. Short hair is easy and I like how it looks on me, but I'm ready for a change. In fact, I've started taking prenatal vitamins to help the growing-out process. I've heard good things about them, but blech, they taste horrible. Has anyone tried them before?

What's occupying your thoughts today?

They do taste horrible. I take them at night and I notice it MUCH less.

I've always kept my hair long and often considered cutting it shorter, but I always chicken out at the last moment!

It can be a lot of work to get it looking good down, either straight or wavy, but still, I like being able to pull it back!

I'm in the same boat as you Alli except that I have had long hair for most of my life then a few months ago I got it cut into a long bob which I LOVE! The thing that bugs me about having short hair is that I have so few options of how to style it. Now I've decided I want it long again. I want to do pretty braids and buns this summer too... Thankfully my hair grows really fast and is already at collarbone length so it should be longish by summer! Good Luck!

Good luck growing your hair - I'd always heard that yogurt (or other things high in calcium) helped with strength issues. I've never heard of using prenatal vitamins!

I go through this flip-flop all the time, too. On the one hand, I love how put-together and modern and hip short hair looks and how quick and easy it is to clean and style it, but on the other, there are very few options on how to style it and sometimes I need to get my hair out of my face and off my neck. I think it also might be easier to hide dirtiness/oiliness when it's long, too...

Will you try for epic long-ness, or just see how far you get before it starts to become too much of a burden?

yuck! I have a 19 month old daughter and I remember how gross prenatal vitamins were. I agree with K, if you take them at night and with something in your stomach it's much better. I also had to take a separate Fish Oil capsule. Disgusting! The capsle part always disintegrated fast and you always had this raw fish taste in your mouth.

Chopping all my hair off again!

Preenie vitamins? Oh yeah, well if you think they taste gross going DOWN, imagine how they taste trying to force their way up your little esophagus during an hourly bout of morning sickness.
I could go on, but... ehh.. ew.

I go through this thing where I cut, grow out. Cut, grow out. Cut, grow out. Last fall? CUT. This spring? Grow out. I guess it's just boredom, or wanting what we can't have.

Oh- and what's up with the vitamins? Is it just the hair, or are you working on expanding the family?! Do tell (if you want)! ;)

For several years I was in the grow out/cut off cycle, but I got stuck on short about two years ago and now I'm bored! Short hair is great, but yeah, there are so few options for styling. I'm not going to go super long; I'm thinking to my shoulder bones or so. We'll see how long it takes to get there.

Haha, Kate - nope, I promise that I'm suffering through the nasty vitamins only for the sake of my hair (and Michelle, that fish oil sounds HORRIBLE - ewwww!). Percy and Caesar are enough for us to handle!

A couple of summers ago I shaved all of my very long hair off for a part in a play. It has been interesting observing it sloooowly grow back, and experimenting with different styles along the way!

There's an easy way to have fish oil. They have this stuff at GMC called CoreOmega. It tastes like orange and there is no after taste. I have a friend who has hair past her knees and her secret (finally revealed)is to eat an eight egg white omlet every morning. The high protein diet really helps with hair.

I'm trying to grow my hair out too! I feel like it's been a very looong process. I'll have to think about trying prenatal vitamins!

Heh. I used to take prenatal vitamins for this reason, but my hair and NAILS grew too fast for my liking! Seriously. So, now I'm back to regular vitties. I never noticed an off taste though, but you do need to have something in your stomach. As for fish oil, I take those too, and pretty much every brand I've seen makes a "coated" variety - no more fish taste/burps! Fantastic :) Good luck with your new endeavor!
