Gift for a Girl

Last year, I made my youngest niece a Black Apple doll from Emily's Martha Stewart pattern. I wasn't sure if she would like it - I was afraid it might be one of those things that adults love, but kids aren't so crazy about. You can imagine how happy I was to hear that she *loved* the doll. In fact, she still sleeps with it and calls it her "baby." This year, my brother and sister-in-law thought that she would like to have another doll under the tree to be a friend to the original. Sounds good to me!

Since my niece is about to turn two, I decided to make this year's doll a little more elaborate than last year's. I was super inspired by Chez Beeper Bebe's version, so I gave the doll a dress with a bib detail, knee socks, mary-janes, a capelet, and a beret.

Chez Beeper Bebe's doll accessories were so fun to make! I recently claimed that my pom-pom garlands were my favorite thing I had made recently, but they held that title for less than a week because this little capelet easily zoomed past them. The outside is a scrap of velvet and the lining is printed satin. I was worried about working with such tricky fabrics on such a small scale, but I'm proud to say that the finished product is gorgeous! I suddenly want to make a million tiny capelets and put them on everything in the house.

Now I just need to wrap her up and hope that my niece falls in love with her on Christmas morning!

Wow, you are so talented!! I love your doll. I really liked how you stitched the face instead of painted it. When I make another, I'm going to try that. So cute!!

She's so sweet! I especially adore the long stripey socks and the mary janes. I've tried this pattern once but I wasn't too thrilled about the result (due to too much haste/poor sewing skills) but yours turned out great.

That is so cute! I have had that doll pattern saved on my computer for ages. I really want to make one but the only nieces my boyfriend has are too old for dolls. It may have to wait till we have kids.

I know what you mean about gifts that adults love but kids don't - but this looks like a winner all around. Merry Christmas, Alli!

How did your niece like the doll? I have been trying to come up w/ gifts for the daughters of our old babysitter. Was it pretty complicated? Did it take long? We will be driving from Alaska to Indiana in two weeks so it might help pass the time while we are on the road (8 days w/ 3 boys, a BIG puppy and a small dog, and my hubby...all crammed into a Honda Pilot, umm sound like fun?)

Hi!
I love your doll! Could you tell me how you made the striped socks? I'm hoping to make some of these dolls, and would love to add the striped socks
Thank you,

Hi Peggy! I'm happy to report that she loved it. The project might be a little fiddly for the car (lots of tiny pieces), but you might be fine. I would give it a try and see - even if it doesn't turn out perfectly, it will pass the time!

Clare, they are very easy - I'll email you now!
