Twilight Party Dorkiness

Okay, let's get this straight. As a fan of good literature and good movies, I know that both incarnations of Twilight are crap. As a feminist, I'm concerned about young girls reading the books. As a hypocrite, however, I find Twilight to be So. Much. Fun. If I do say so myself, S. and I threw and awesome Twilight party this weekend, and a grand, silly time was had by all!

S. and I were at a conference all day before the party, so we couldn't have put this together without the help of our menfolk. They made cocktails, baked us yummy food, and shopped. Then they quickly retreated in fear, haha.

As the drinks were chilling before the party, S. commented that our fridge looked like Vampire Bill had been using it. Of course, Vampire Bill prefers Type O, but still. (Jones Soda and cocktails poured into Jone's Soda bottles, labels found here).

What better way to accompany junk food for your brain than with junk food for your body? The boys outdid themselves - our spread was delicious!

The fabulous Sarah from Welcome to Girl Land made an equally-fabulous "Twingo" game for us to play while we watched the movie. People got really, super, hilariously competitive with this. In retrospect, that might have had something to do with the cocktails and the ridiculous quantities of sugar available. Also, my friends are awesome.

For the decorations, S. and I took our cue from the book covers and turned my living room into a sparkly, lacy, red and black dazzle-fest. We might have gone a little overboard with the discount Halloween fabrics at Jo Ann's, but it did look pretty fantastic (on a side note, there is still glitter from the sparkly fabrics lurking about the living room. Curse you, sparkly vampires!).

Oh, guilty pleasures. Are there any other closet vampire fans out there?

Not unlike you, I hate that little girls are reading about Bella Swan and her inability to 'hold it together' when Edward leaves...She's a weak heroine, and I hate that. But, not unlike you, I enjoyed the series (until the end)...it was cotton candy for my brain :-)

As a self proclaimed book snob and former english major I resisted the series for a long time. I finally succumbed after my mom left the first book at my house saying she read it "to see what all the fuss was about". Well - I picked it up expecting to hate it and a week later had consumed all four novels!

Love your party ideas - what FUN!

I am a "literary snob" according to my fiance. Actually right now I am about half way through a classic D.H. Lawrence. I am also a huge horror movie fan. So, of course Twilight would be a piece of crap.

But, if you guys promise not to tell anyone, I will admit that I love the movie. I have wanted to read the book, but I haven't been able to bring myself to buy it! Mostly because I like to buy only used books and I haven't found it in any local used book stores.

Your party looks like a lot of fun! Even though, no, I did not like the books (and I'm a firm believer in brain candy!). The second one just... lost me. I hope you enjoy the second movie as much!

B/c it's so timely and does twist on intellectual discourse on Twilight, a link to YA author John Green's blogpost today "On Liking Twilight".

Yay Twilight fans (and not-so-fans, I definitely understand your position, Larkin)! Kimberly, I was also really unhappy with the end; I prefer to forget about Breaking Dawn and make up my own ending to the series. Btstars, you should try the used section on Amazon. It's hard not to feel a little shame purchasing a Twilight book in public, haha. Ooo, I'm jealous, Kristen, it looks like I won't have a chance to see New Moon until Sunday! I'm definitely looking forward to it, though. Bethany, I really like the link - good stuff! The misogynistic analyses of Twilight fans are easily as obnoxious as the misogynism inherent in the books.

Twilight is a guilty pleasure. I despised the last book though. I actually went on a Twilight hating spree for two months afterward. I'm probably the only person who hasn't seen nor wants to see the movies. I will not allow my brain to be infected with how the characters look in the movies. I prefer my brain's imagining of them.

I'll take a type A positive (aka my blood type), as long as it's non-alcoholic. I'm turning 21 this year and I STILL won't be able to drink alcohol. It appears I'm alcohol-intolerant. I'm tipsy off a tablespoon of really bad (if I must say so myself) wine and piss drunk off one adult dose of low-alcohol Nyquil. Alcohol + Kate = bad mix.

I, too, am a closet fan! I don't admit it to many (okay except the whole internet now), but I read all four books in about a week. I could. not. stop. That being said, I thought the movie was pure and utter crap. Like, they knew the movie would be a hit so they put no time/effort into screenwriting/casting/etc etc. Blah!

like everyone here, I am a bit of a lit snob (currently reading Ivanhoe) and picked up the book to see what the fuss was about. I read all the books in a week. Its great fluff reading

Haha, this is starting to feel a bit like an AA meeting: hello, my name is ______ and I love Twilight." Sometimes you need fluff! I must admit that although he's a terrible actor, I love Robert Pattinson as Edward. He's just so nice to look at! *Swoon*

Sorry, Kate, the Type A (positive) was alcoholic, but you could have had the Type B (negative - get it? :-p). Our non-drinkers thought it was quite delicious!

Haha, great team party! I do love twilight, but I have to agree, Bella is a little bit to weak for my taste in heroines. And I hate the name Renesme! That is just to cheesy.
But I do love the woolfs and blood suckers:)

Oh my God, I wish I could have experienced the Twi-party awesomeness! You know I'm a total closet fan and hate myself for it. :)

Did you see New Moon? It was out of control in NYC, I'll tell you that much! ;)

Oh, and the word verification for this comment was "jaccup". Priceless! :)

Yes, saw it! I was so busy on Friday and Saturday that I was intending to wait until Sunday afternoon to see it, but I just couldn't hold out and ended up going to the late late show on Friday night. Totally worth the lost hours of sleep! I thought it was better than both the first movie and the book.

I wish I could have flown you out to Ohio for the party, Flor!

Haha, "jacupp"is an excellent word verification.
