Sew-a-long: What Shall We Make?

Okay, so I'm thrilled that other people think a sew-a-long sounds fun! I've picked three potential patterns for us to start with. These three are my front runners because they are good beginner projects, they all yield a cute product, and I've made them all before, so I know the ins-and-outs of the patterns (in theory at least!).

Burdastyle Charlie Bag

Pattern price: free!
Why I think it's a good choice: this is a great beginner pattern that will let you practice your skills stitching along straight lines and around curves. To make it more interesting, the potential for customization is endless. Plus, it makes a great gift; always good at this time of year!

Burdastyle Anda Dress

Pattern price: $3.50
Why I think it's a good choice: this dress is a perfect start to sewing clothes from a pattern - it's simple and straightforward, and will leave you feeling ready to move on with confidence. The dress can come out looking a bit like a hospital gown, but don't be fooled; it can also be really cute.

Burdastyle Marie Skirt

Pattern price: free!
Why I think it's a good choice: the Marie is a beginner project that will allow you to practice some more advanced techniques - setting a waistband, making pleats, and placing a zipper. With those under your belt, you'll be able to sew just about any basic skirt. Plus, it's just so cute!

So, which of these do you think we should sew? Leave your vote in the poll on the sidebar! I'll announce the winner and post our first "assignment" early next week.

Looks like the Charlie bag is in the lead... I would love to do the skirt : )

Oh my gosh- that skirt is too cute! I seriously just bought an orange skirt from Banana Republic that is so similar to this one. Bummer that it was $70. Even when I was buying it I thought "I could totally make this". One day I will get back to sewing more... all knitting for now! I hope everyone enjoys the sew-a-long. What fun!

I agree that the bag would be a good first project. :-)

I don't think those clothing patterns come in sizes that would fit everyone (plus size gal here). I'd love to be able to participate so... purse?

Oh, silly me, I didn't even think to look at sizes! It looks like the Marie goes up to a 12 and the Anda to an 18.

Charlie bag is still in the lead, but don't worry if your favorite doesn't win - we can always do another pattern after we finish the first!

I'm a bit grumpy because we're in the process of moving and my sewing machine has alreasy been packed and shipped. Even still, I like the skirt.

Aw, I'm sorry, Stephanie! Hopefully you'll be able to jump in when you get settled.

Just read your blog for the first time and shocked that I've managed to find a sew-a-long that's not already over. I'd love to make the skirt, especially in a rich colour like that one.
